This violin has been re-listed- it was kept as a personal instrument, but we have since acquired a new violin.
It has a new tailpiece, upgraded strings and is ready to perform.
It has a very woodsy or a wood sound, sought after by bluegrass genre, would make a professional bluegrass fiddle or a violin for advanced play. Due to the woodsy sound this may not be a top choice for those looking to play in a symphony professionally.
I've been told, Andrew Hyde was an assistant to Thomas Edison. Also, I hear one if his violins is in a prominent museum!
This violin by Andrew Hyde #166 is quite an anomaly of a violin. Complete with a 'birthmark' knot at the lower left bout.
Youtube sound sample:
This well known maker's violin found its way to Oklahoma. The earliest known accounts of it was being purchased at a yard sale circa 1980. The violin had a microphone duct taped to it.
The violin was purchased for a daughter that wanted to learn violin. It was taken to a local luthier to get into playing condition. The luthier removed the duct tape and appears to have removed all the varnish, save one small area under the fingerboard. It the process the edge work of the front of the violin was sanded down too.
The violin stayed with the same family until this year. It was purchased with a poorly repaired peg box fracture, low projection among other issues.
The violin underwent over $2,000 in repairs to restore to prime playing condition. Small remnants of the repairs are visible around the peg bushings, especially the 'A' peg. It was bushed, and 2 cleats added to the peg box to put it back in playing condition along with correcting the projection and a broken button.
After so much abuse and neglect, the violin is proudly singing once more. It has 'opened up' in sound so much in just the short time playing it.
The violin is verified to be Mr. Hyde, there are additional stamps and information inside the violin. I'm happy to share with the new owner all the photos taken during restoration.
It's a lovely piece of history from a famous maker and looking for a new loving home.
The violin does come with a 7 day return policy, for peace of mind purchasing, please see shop policy on returns for details. This romantic and charming violin is sure to be a conversation piece, and the tone has a way of melting hearts.
Play on my friends!
